Together we Learn, Together we Achieve

Welcome to Little Heath Primary School. Please explore our website to see what we are achieving; wider opportunities, sport, and helpful links. At Little Heath Primary School, we strive to make children feel safe, to achieve their full aspirations, and have the knowledge and skills to REACH their full potential.

Mathematics

At Little Heath Primary school, we are committed to providing all children with a curriculum that has a clear intention and impacts positively upon their needs. We are adopting a mastery approach to Mathematics, in order to deliver the three aims of the National Curriculum:

1. Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. Through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

2. Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry. Conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

3. Can solve problems by applying their mathematics. Doing this with a variety of routine and nonroutine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Underpinning this pedagogy is a belief that all children can achieve in Maths. We believe in promoting sustained and deepening understanding by employing mastery strategies, with teaching for conceptual understanding at the heart of everything we do, beginning in the foundation stage. Children are provided with the opportunity to develop their conceptual understanding through the use of manipulatives and visual representations with clear mathematical language modelled from teachers.

All children are expected to succeed and make progress from their starting points. Teachers teach the skills needed to succeed in mathematics providing examples of good practice and having high expectations.

We follow the National Curriculum at Little Heath Primary School.

Progression

Our curriculum is designed to ensure steady progression, helping students improve skills and apply them. We prioritise the development of vocabulary as part of our commitment to supporting every child's learning journey. We understand that building a rich vocabulary is key to academic success and communication. Our curriculum is designed to ensure steady progression, helping students expand their vocabulary, improve language skills, and apply them. Below, you will find the relevant documents that outline our approach to progression within Maths.
