At Little Heath Primary we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile, and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel, and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. We value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.
Our Design and Technology curriculum guides children through a creative journey, allowing them to implement a range of cross-curricular skills in a purposeful and constructive manner. The heart of the subject sees children designing something, for somebody, for some purpose, mirroring the aims and objectives of the National Curriculum while cultivating an imaginative and passionate ethos surrounding the subject.
As children progress through the school, technical knowledge is developed alongside the underpinned foundations of design, make, evaluate. Children are encouraged to use their imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, and values. Children are taught to research, develop, and communicate their ideas before working with a range of tools and components to create high quality products.
Throughout this process children develop the willingness to take creative risks, safely and hygienically. They work co-operatively and constructively with others and take pride in evaluating their process and products. Through high quality teaching, including that of cooking and nutrition, children become innovative, curious, and creative individuals, finishing their Little Heath journey equipped with a bank of practical life skills.
We follow the national curriculum at Little Heath Primary School.
At Little Heath Primary School, we prioritise the development of vocabulary as part of our commitment to supporting every child's learning journey. We understand that building a rich vocabulary is key to academic success and communication. Our curriculum is designed to ensure steady progression, helping students expand their vocabulary, improve language skills, and apply them. Below, you will find the relevant documents that outline our approach to vocabulary development and skills progression within Art and Design.
